Chapter 6: Simulation Exercise

Dallas

“Today will be our final training exercise,” Instructor Hunt Ryker barked in his drill sergeant voice that Dallas found completely swoony. She watched beneath her lashes as he stalked with military precision in front of them, while describing the requirements of their final challenge. They were standing in the staging area outside the Auditorium. A large black SUV with tinted windows was idling with its doors open. It contained all six of their dogs in their cages, plus whatever equipment they would be allowed to use during the scenario.

Our last day of training. Dallas and her classmates traded a few amazed glances at the knowledge that they’d survived the rigors of the prestigious Disaster City Search and Rescue Academy. Well, almost. They had one last challenge to complete.

As hard as she tried to focus on what Hunt was saying, Dallas’s thoughts kept drifting to how lucky she was that they’d gotten to spend the last month at the academy together, getting to know each other in ways that some couples never got to know each other.

She’d gotten to witness firsthand how hard he worked, how both demanding and patient he was with his students, and how impeccable his work ethic was. He’d kept his promise to Officer Collins, too, by keeping things unquestionably professional between them in class. He’d done more than his fair share of silent flirting from a distance, though. The way he looked at her during their gym workouts had kept her on the edge of crazy for nearly four straight weeks. She was practically dying to be in his arms again, but not once had he called, texted, touched, or put any moves on her.

Instead, he’d continued to push her and her classmates to their maximum capabilities and potential, day in and day out.

And today would be no exception. Dallas’s heartbeat sped in anticipation of another grueling exercise. If Instructor Collins was letting Hunt take the lead, she and her classmates were all but guaranteed to spend their day getting sweaty and dirty. They would be exhausted at the end, but exhilarated about what they’d learned. It was always that way when Hunt was in charge. He was an all-or-nothing kind of guy. It was one of the biggest things she loved about him.

Love? Dallas pressed a hand to her racing heart, wondering where that thought had come from. They weren’t even dating yet, and they’d only kissed one time, but…

“You still alive over there, Trainee Hill?” Hunt demanded.

She blinked and forced her attention back to what he was saying. “Yes, sir.” His scowl made her flush. A-a-a-nd I’m no longer in love with you. Just a short-lived brainstorm. Fully recovered. She straightened her shoulders, hating the way he’d called her out like that in front of her classmates and hating herself a little more for giving him reason to.

“Good, because your team mates probably wouldn’t appreciate me sending the whole pack of you on a lap around the field just to wake you up.
